- The Fâtiha
Fâtiha means ‘opening’ and is the name of the first sûra (chapter) of the Qur’an.
It is a prayer which is recited during every rakca (unit) of the salât (ritual prayer) so that a Muslim who performs the five daily prayers will recite it 17 times in the day.
The following is the text:
bismi Llâhi al-Rahmâni al-Rahîm
al-hamdu li-Llâhi rabbi l-câlimîn
al-Rahmâni al-Rahîm
mâliki yawmi l-dîn
iyyâka nacbudu wa-iyyâka nastacîn
ihdinâ l-sirâta al-mustaqîm
sirâta alladhîna ancamta calayhim
ghayri l)maghzûbi calayhim
wa-lâ zâlîn
In the name of God, the Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy
Praise belongs to God, Lord of the Worlds,
The Lord of Mercy, the Giver of Mercy,
Master of the Day of Judgement.
It is You we worship; it is You we ask for help.
Guide us to the straight path:
The path of those you have blessed,
Those who incur no anger
And who have not gone astray.
Those performing the prayer say âmîn at the end of the text.
